Alpacas as pets

Alpacas make wonderful pets. People who have bought alpacas from us find that they become very tame, feeding from their own buckets, and even responding to their names.

People sometimes keep alpacas to protect their hens or sheep - alpacas instinctively defend themselves against foxes and if kept with hens or sheep will also afford them protection. Alpacas are also an attractive alternative to sheep for keeping the grass down.

Because alpacas are herd animals they need to be kept in groups of at least two, otherwise they pine. Husbandry is relatively simple, compared with keeping horses, sheep or donkeys. You can keep up to five or six alpacas per acre. Field shelters are required, for use as the alpacas desire.

Intact males may become difficult to manage when they mature, so we always geld alpacas before selling them as pet alpacas. We geld males after they are 18 months old, as recommended by the British Alpaca Society.

Town End Alpacas provide full training and 24 hour support is always available. We can find help with finding a shearer and what to do with fleece. We can supply feed (at volume discount prices) in whatever quantities you require.

We have a good selection of both huacaya and suri boys in a broad range of colours. Please visit to see what we have on offer and find out more about these amazing animals, or to book a place on one of our introduction to alpacas courses.
